Grade 7 & 8

Our Technology Vision Overview

Children in grades 7 and 8 are navigating one of the most complex social landscapes of their lives, and much of it is happening online. Peer relationships are intensifying, identity is forming, and curiosity about social media, gaming, and online communities is high. Research consistently links heavy social media use at this age to increased anxiety, disrupted sleep, and challenges with self-esteem. At the same time, technology used intentionally can support creativity, learning, and connection. The goal at this stage is not to resist access entirely, but to act as a coach to help develop self-awareness, judgment, and healthy habits before they have full independence. Seven Hills approaches technology use in grades 7 and 8 with emphasis on responsible use, community learning, and utilizing technology as one of many tools to support learning and continue skill building. Faculty and staff model positive technology behaviors. Every family is unique, and we recognize that you know your child best. These guidelines are offered as research-based recommendations to help you make informed decisions that work for your family.

AT SCHOOL

What Students Do:

  • Access school email accounts to contact teachers and track schoolwork in Canvas.
  • Organize files and homework with online tools, such as Canvas.
  • Develop stronger research skills, create multimedia presentations and digital artwork, collaborate, code, and explore data science.
  • Evaluate sources and bias, digital citizenship, online safety, social media literacy, responsible AI use, and computational thinking.
  • Work with increasing independence on longer-form assignments, including a digital portfolio.
  • Practice coding skills and basic CAD modeling.
  • Take MAP Assessments on iPads.

School Policies:

  • iPad goes home nightly — for school use only.
  • Passwords should only be shared with parents, advisers, and the Technology Department.
  • Limited access to apps (school-approved only).
  • Personal devices (phones, smartwatches) are collected at the beginning of the day and returned at the end of each day. No other personal devices should be brought to school.
  • All technology use is supervised and purposeful.

AT HOME

Best Practices:

  • Technology should not replace physical movement/activities, reading, or creative exploration.
  • Viewing is reviewed by adults.
  • Use the school iPad for schoolwork only.
  • For recreational use, allow kids to use family devices only (your phone, a shared family iPad, or television); no personal devices for children.
  • Choose long-form content (longer shows, documentaries) over short-form content (YouTube shorts, Instagram reels, etc.).
  • Stay curious and engaged; discuss what they are doing online and show interest.
  • Be transparent — let your child know devices will be monitored.
  • Limit to one and a half to two hours daily.

Tech-Free Zones:

  • Bedrooms (charge in common areas)
  • Dinner time, car rides, playgrounds, and grocery stores
  • One hour before bedtime
